As we head back to Parliament, I’m filled with determination and hope. The first week back after the summer break for many across our city is a daunting but exciting time. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work on the change our country voted for.

This week we’ve got bills coming to the House of Commons on a range of policies; here are just a few:

Starting Work to Reform Renters’ Rights
Housing is a fundamental right, and it’s time we ensure that renters are protected. I’m committed to securing reforms that will offer greater security and fairness for tenants,
including measures to cap rent increases, strengthen eviction protections, and introduce a national landlord register to improve accountability and transparency.

Proposing Stronger Water Company Regulation
We’ve got to hold water companies accountable. I will be pushing for regulations that ensure they operate transparently and responsibly, including tougher penalties for pollution,
requirements for investment in infrastructure to reduce leaks, and measures to ensure that profits are reinvested into improving services. If they don’t, then water bosses should
personally face the consequences.

Levelling Up Workers’ Rights
Every worker deserves fair treatment and protection. This week, I will be championing policies aimed at strengthening workers’ rights, including the right to flexible working,
enhanced parental leave, and measures to support those in precarious employment. We will also bring in a £10 minimum wage and protections against zero-hour contracts.

Creating Great British Energy
The energy landscape is changing; we’ve seen that with the announcement of the price increase only last week. That’s why we’re in the second stage of establishing ‘Great British
Energy’, focusing on sustainable and renewable energy sources while creating green jobs and reducing our carbon footprint. This includes investing in offshore wind, solar power, and
community energy projects.

Tightening Rules on MPs’ Second Jobs
Transparency and integrity in politics are paramount. At the election, I was clear I wouldn’t have a second job. I’m committed to tightening the rules surrounding MPs’ second jobs to
ensure that our focus remains on serving you, our constituents, with stricter guidelines on conflicts of interest, bans on paid advocacy, and greater transparency around MPs’ financial
interests.

Bringing Rail Back into Public Ownership
Public transport should serve the public, not profits. That’s why I’m proud this government will return rail to the service of the British public. Bringing rail into public ownership ensures that services are run for the benefit of passengers, not shareholders. Our bill includes plans to improve services, reduce fares, and enhance connectivity, as well as expanding public transport options to underserved areas.

This new Labour government is full of energy, ideas, and a drive to deliver on our mandate for change. I’m ready to pass the laws we urgently need to fix the foundations and build a better Britain for all. Let’s get to work!
