Portsmouth Lib Dem’s have descended into chaos ahead of Thursday’s local elections following the publication ofindependent research today which shows Portsmouth City Council is now amongst the worst-run councils in England.

The data, published by the Office for Local Government (Oflog) and analysed by The Times ranks Lib Dem-led Portsmouth City Council staggeringly 293rd down the list of councils in England out of 318 – putting the council and our services in the bottom 10% in the country.

Portsmouth Labour have long contested that while the Lib Dems claim to be ‘doing a good job’ or ‘running the council well’, the facts and local people’s perceptions say otherwise.

With a dither and delays over new swimming facilities, key developments failing to materalise and a stagnating city centre, Portsmouth residents will not be surprised to read thatthe local authority has been ranked by Oflog as the second worst-run council in the country when it comes to planning.

As Labour has long pointed out, Portsmouth Council is also failing on recycling. Today’s findings show the council is one of the 15 worst in the country on waste with council recycling just 27.1% of it household waste and glass recycling enforced on it by the government.

Just as worryingly, following years of Lib Dem financial incompetence, the council is ranked in the bottom quarter of the country on financial management.

A spokesperson for Portsmouth Labour said: “These bombshell findings by the independent watchdog enforces what many Portsmouth residents have been telling us on the doorstep – the council is being terribly run and it is time for a change with Labour.

Our positive plan for Portsmouth will deliver a greener, safer and fairer city”.
