Labour has announced exciting plans for a state-of-the-art lido in Southsea, providing clean, safe outdoor swimming for all.

Taking inspiration from a highly successful project in Brighton, the proposed lido aims to provide residents and visitors with a fantastic new facility right in the heart of our seafront.

Brighton’s new Sea Lanes pool has won widespread acclaim for its innovative design and contribution to the community – and Portsmouth Labour aims to create a similar landmark attraction in Southsea. By investing in this project, the party seeks to enhance the city’s leisure opportunities and provide a unique space for individuals and families to enjoy.

Edward Batterbury, council candidate for Eastney & Craneswater Road said: “I hear all the time that our council just isn’t ambitious enough for our city. We want to change that! These exciting new plans show what can happen when ambition and a desire to push for change come together. There are currently a few potential sites for the lido that could rejuvenate parts of our seafront and if Labour gets the green light for our bid a full public consultation will take place to ensure residents’ views are heard.

“The former Eastney Swimming Baths site presents an exciting opportunity to breathe new life into this historic location, while the Pyramids site in the heart of Southsea, nearing the end of its lifespan, could also serve as an ideal location for the lido.”

The plans have come at a time when choices for swimmers in the city are drying up. “Swimming pools across the city have closed. The Liberal Democrats promised a new pool at Bransbury Park, but it has been downgraded and planning is in chaos,” added the Labour candidate for Eastney & Craneswater.

In addition to providing an exciting new outdoor swimming facility, the proposed lido addresses growing concerns around the quality of water in the sea. Portsmouth Labour is committed to campaigning against the disgraceful behaviour of the water companies in allowing sewage to spill on our beaches and into our waters, and you can pledge your support by signing up to this petition from Stephen Morgan MP. https://www.stephenmorgan.org.uk/pledge-your-support-stop-the-sewage

Edward adds: “Given the issue of continued sewage contamination, it is essential to offer swimmers safe and controlled environments for their enjoyment. The lido would ensure that individuals have access to a clean and secure outdoor swimming facility, promoting health and well-being throughout the community”.

These plans sit alongside Labour’s dedication to creating vibrant and inclusive spaces for the community. By investing in this project, we aim to foster a sense of pride and enjoyment among residents, bolster tourism, and contribute to the overall development and prosperity of the city.
