The Portsmouth Labour Group is exceptionally pleased with the recent election results, where we retained three councillors in Fratton, Central Southsea and St Jude and gained two councillors in Charles Dickens and Cosham. We are now a larger and more diverse group of Labour councillors – a group of nine – and proudly by electing Yinka Adeniran, residents have elected the first Black woman councillor in Portsmouth.

Importantly, Labour came first in the popular votes across the city; beating the Liberal Democrats by 5%. Given the performance of the Liberal Democrats nationally this was an extraordinary testament to our record over the last year, but also to the campaigning zeal of our members, activists and candidates. We want to thank all our candidates for standing and Portsmouth residents who have put their trust in us to make our city an even better place to live.

In terms of future plans, we aim to be the biggest party in the city within the coming years – pushing it in a better direction and representing the people of Portsmouth like never before. To that end, the Portsmouth Labour Group has decided to elect Cllr Cal Corkery as Group Leader and Cllr Charlotte Gerada as Deputy Group Leader. They will endeavour to build on the excellent progress of recent years, creating a strong foundation to build for future elections. The Labour Group thanks George for his brilliant work and support over the past year to councillors, candidates and members.

The Labour Group would like to emphasise thanks again to all the residents who voted Labour this election – we look forward to working with you to make Portsmouth an even greener, safer and fairer city for all.
