Portsmouth’s Labour Group Leader and city MP Stephen Morgan joined forces to welcome the Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy to Portsmouth today, as the party steps up its campaigning ahead of the local elections in May.

Mr Lammy kicked-off conversations on the doorstep with voters in Milton and Fratton with the local Labour team tonight, with candidates Paula Ann Savage and George Fielding, the Labour Group Leader.

Topics included the cost-of-living crisis, access to NHS healthcare and GP services and threats to Portsmouth’s naturalenvironment.

The key Labour figure is currently leading the Party’s response to the ongoing situation in Ukraine, as local communities across the city this week came together to support those fleeing the humanitarian crisis.

The Member of Parliament for Portsmouth South, Stephen Morgan MP, said: “I’m delighted to welcome David to Portsmouth today to join Portsmouth Labour candidates and activists as we speak to as many people across our city.

“For years, David has been a champion of working people and their families, always listening and acting on the issues that matter to them.

“I’m grateful to him for giving up his time this today to speak with Portsmouth residents and lend a hand to Labours fantastic local candidates for this May.”

Shadow Foreign Secretary, David Lammy MP, also said: “It was a real pleasure to join the local Labour team out and about in Portsmouth today, listening to views and concerns people have at the moment.

“I know the value of having more Labour councillors on the local council and Portsmouth’s Labour candidates will be tireless champions for their community, fighting on the issues that matter to their constituents.

It is clear to me from conversations I have had in Milton and Central Southsea today that people are in urgent need of a local recovery plan, but only Labour’s representatives havethe vision and commitment to deliver it.

“I wish them and all the other Labour candidates in the area the best of luck for the rest of the campaign.”

Cllr George Fielding added: What a great privilege it was to campaign alongside David and Stephen today.  It is great to see strong national MPs taking an interest in the good work Labour are doing on the city council and being involved at such a local level.

Under my leadership, the Labour Group on the city council has gone from strength to strength and I’m excited to bolster those numbers in the upcoming local elections in May and show people what a Labour-run city council can do for them.
Today was a great opportunity also to share some of the initiatives we have been working on in Portsmouth and particular in both Milton and Central Southsea, such as the biodiversity improvements and greening that will help improve the local environment.”
