Parking sign in the new zone
Parking sign in the new zone

We have spoken to and heard from hundreds of residents at public meetings and on the doorstep about their experience of Registered Parking Zones. Labour understands the need to balance the need for moderate car ownership and car use with our pledges to reduce congestion and improve air quality. Our priorities include:

• Addressing serious traffic congestion and reducing traffic and air pollution

• Developing a better integrated traffic and transport strategy for Portsmouth

• Tackling city-wide parking problems with a strategy that works for the whole city

• Delivering a city which is net zero carbon by 2030

Thats why we’ve developed 8 key points based on what you’ve been telling us.

1. No removal of existing Resident’s Parking Zones. We will undertake the potential reworking of zones once community involvement to address people’s concerns has been undertaken.
2. Implement the citywide strategy devopled by the council to end the problems caused by the piecemeal introduction of Resident’s Parking Zones.
3. Explore the introduction of a free first permit.
4. Better and broader engagement with residents to ensure any parking zones meet the needs of residents and their particular circumstances.
5. Explore free and discounted bus travel and introduce better and safer cycling and increase facilities for electric cars.
6. Deliver cross-party solutions which are fair and equal.
7. Work with the University around student vehicles. Work with businesses and other owners of significant car parking facilities to open up space.
8. Develop and integrated transport policy to reduce the need for car usage.
