Portsmouth Labour councillors

Last month saw the last Full Council before the important local elections this May.

The meeting had a packed agenda and a number of key contributions from our Labour councillor team on our flagship policies, delivering both brave ideas and bold actions for Portsmouth.

Here’s a few examples…

Declaring a climate change emergency

Working with the local community and campaigners, I am delighted that our motion to declare a climate change emergency in the city was passed unanimously. The motion now pushes the Administration into developing an implementation plan to ensure Portsmouth’s net carbon emissions are reduced to zero by 2030. My huge thanks to party members who helped develop the motion and offered their expertise. Of course that was the easy bit, and now we need to hold the council to deliver this commitment and work together to protect our planet.

Adopting Unison’s Ethical Care Charter

The Government are neglecting the crisis in social care and we desperately need to know their plans to end the unsustainable way services are currently funded. The Labour Group has listened to those in the care sector and trade unions and therefore pushed for the adoption Unison’s Ethical Care Charter. This important campaign aims to expand union membership, give care workers the support and confidence, improve employee relations and raise standards within the sector. My thanks to those in the local trade union movement who worked with us to get this charter finally adopted at the city council.

Ending piecemeal parking plans

We’ve engaged hundreds of people in recent weeks in finding out views and concerns over the approach to parking in our city. At council yesterday we held the Lib Dem administration to account on their piecemeal approach to zone schemes and the impact this is having on local families, businesses and schools. The council can do better on this problem that we hear about on the doorstep too often and we will continue to campaign for a plan that works for the whole city and to ensure the council listens to legitimate concerns.

What next?

These are just a few examples of how our local councillors are demonstrating that Labour has the ambition and leadership to tackle the issues our city faces head on. We’ve had a number of successes this year, but we can do more by electing more Labour voices on the council this May.
