Portsmouth Labour is committed to fighting for environmental and social justice and have been at the forefront of campaigns to respond to the climate emergency.

Labour councillors have been pushing the Liberal Democrats who run the council to be bolder on the climate. More Labour councillors would mean more action on the environment. We pledge to:

  • Meet our target of a zero carbon city by 2030 by producing a climate action plan, working with city partners and engaging citizens with Citizen Assemblies
  • Invest in renewable energy infrastructure, including shore power to reduce emissions in the port and more charging and fast-charging points for electric vehicles
  • Continue to oppose the AQUIND interconnector, any environmentally destructive plans for Tipner West and Southern Water sewage discharges
  • Protect, improve and increase green spaces, including parklets, wildflower meadows and tree planting
  • Increase recycling points, rubbish bins on streets and roll out kerbside collection of glass and mixed plastics
  • Focus on improving air quality, by expanding the Clean Air Zone, increasing cycling provision and launching a council-run bus service
  • Prioritise cheaper, greener and more frequent buses to reduce travel by car
